QUALIFICATION

NATIONAL DIPLOMA: FITNESS

(NQF – Level 5, 240 Credits, 2 Year Learning Programme, Full Time, Part Time or Correspondence)

COURSE DESCRIPTION & OPPORTUNITIES

The purpose of this learning programme is to meet the outcomes of the National Diploma in Fitness.  The programme prepares students to work with special populations and the programme meets the assessment criteria of the national qualification and students will be assessed against those criteria. A qualifying student who has achieved this qualification will be able to:

  • Design and implement physical activity programmes for apparently healthy special populations (Pregnancy, Children & Youth, Older Adults & Increased Risk or Athletes).
  • Screen, assess and monitor health related fitness programmes, without direct supervision for these special populations. Range: Apparently healthy special populations, asymptomatic and without apparent risk (see ACSM guidelines and risk stratification).
  • Provide advice on stress management, nutrition and lifestyle and display communication and lifestyle counselling skills that assist clients in making healthy lifestyle choices.
Specialisations:  Students can elect to work with special population groups and teach exercise to pregnant clients, children and youth and older adults.  Alternatively, they elect to work with athletes and their sport conditioning needs.   Students choose one of these specialisations but can do both for an additional cost; check the eta price list for details.
COURSE MODULES

Year One:

Cluster 1 (Life skills, legal and professional issues):  Teamwork, Personal organisation in the workplace, Social issues, diversity & equity, Values and ethics, Legal and professional issues, Operate a PC , Plan & conduct research,.

Cluster 2 (Applied exercise science and programme design):  Anatomy & biomechanics, Sport & exercise physiology, Training methods, Design exercise programmes, special needs and disabilities.

Cluster 3 (Screening, assessment and programme implementation):  Nutrition, Wellness & Lifestyle, Screening, Assessment & Testing, Motivation & Communication, and Lead & instruct electives with specialisations of Personal Training with Spinning, Aerobics or Pilates.

Cluster 4 (Risk management, Business management): Entrepreneurship & business management, Fitness facility maintenance, Workplace communication, HIV & AIDS, Safety and risk management, Occupational health and safety.

Year Two:

Cluster 1
(Mentoring, inter personal skills, risk screening):  Mentoring, Personal growth & development, Chronic diseases of lifestyle, Common injuries and risk screening special populations.


Cluster 2
(Exercise science & Special Populations):  Anatomy & biomechanics for special populations, Physiology and special populations, Nutrition & special populations.

Cluster 3
(Fitness Testing and Programme planning for Special populations):  Testing special populations, Exercise programme design and planning for pregnancy, Exercise programme design and planning for children & youth, Exercise programme design and planning for older adults.

OR

Cluster 3
(Sport testing, Programme planning & periodization):Testing for sport, Talent ID & development, Sport fitness conditioning, Periodisation of training

Cluster 4 (Lifestyle coaching):  Public speaking, Lifestyle coaching.
