QUALIFICATION

DIPLOMA: SPORT & FITNESS MANAGEMENT

(NQF – Level 5, 240 Credits, 2 Year Learning Programme, Full Time, Part Time or Correspondence)

COURSE DESCRIPTION & OPPORTUNITIES

The purpose of this learning programme it to provide education, practical training and work related experience to prepare students for work in the fitness and sport management industry regionally, nationally and internationally. 

In their first year, students learn how to plan implement and organise a sport tournament or event, handling volunteers, managing athletes and organising spectators.  The course also covers business and finance management, athlete PR and media management as well as governance in sport and sport sociology.  Students also learn how to provide a safe environment for events and activities related to the sport and fitness industry.  Learning also includes policies and planning to achieve racial, disability and gender equity through sport and programmes.  
Second year work covers Sport administration, Sport marketing including sponsorship packaging, customer care and sport tourism.     Athlete development and sports law and finally Lifestyle and Risk management which includes aspects of exercise, nutrition and health management.

Graduates will be able to assume job responsibilities as a sport or a fitness manager in schools, clubs and private institutions in a range of areas, which includes, but are not limited to event management, sport team management, outdoor adventure and recreation, sport, fitness, park and recreation, as well as disability sport.
COURSE MODULES

Year One:

Cluster 1 (Life skills, programme planning): Induction; Personal organisation, Personal growth & development, HIV & AIDS and participation in Sport, Recreation and Fitness, Principles of physical activity in sport & fitness, Screening & assessment, Manage special needs and disabilities in sport.

Cluster 2 (Event management): Event planning, Volunteer management, Safety and emergency Management, Event implementation, Applied sports marketing.

Cluster 3 (Business management) Business & financial management, Facility management, Sport & Fitness facility maintenance, Business communication, Role & function of governance, Sustainable structures in sport.

Cluster 4 (Athlete and team management): Sport sociology, Social issues, diversity & equity, Team ethics, Team management and logistics, Athlete public relations and media liaison.

Year Two:

Cluster 1 (Sport administration): Induction, Organisation of sport in SA, Operating national and international sport, Staff recruitment, Mentoring in the workplace, Workplace on the job coaching.

Cluster 2 (Sport marketing):  Business and emotional intelligence, Sponsorship packaging and promotions, Analysis of sport statistics, Public relations, Customer care, Sport tourism.

Cluster 3 (Athlete development and sports law): Sports injuries, Talent identification and development, Athlete representation (sport agent), Sport law, Negotiation skills and conflict management.

Cluster 4 (Lifestyle and Risk management):  The role of physical activity in health promotion, Wellness and lifestyle, Nutrition principles, Best practice in sport organizations, Legal & professional issues.
