Courses for careers in sport coaching

In choosing a career in sport coaching and coaching science, graduates are able to work as sport coaches in schools, clubs, sport organisations and federations as well as team or individual coaching.  In addition to the skills just mentioned, diploma graduates are also equipped with the ability to coach at an intermediate to advanced level.  They are also able to work in programmes for talent identification and development through sport academies, federations or communities.

 Careers and jobs in sport coaching

The following gives you an idea of the types of jobs in the fitness and sport industry as well as the required qualifications.

  • Sport coach to beginner and intermediate level: this person helps people participate in either individual or team sports to work towards achieving their sport goals.  He/she would work with youngsters who are starting out in sport or beginner adults who want to embark on a new sport.  They would be able to teach sport skills to beginners and intermediate level athletes of any age.
  • Sport coach to intermediate to advanced level: this person assists athletes or teams to work towards achieving their full potential in sport.  He/she would work with adolescents or adults who have experience in their sport but want to achieve more in terms of conditioning, sport psychology and sport nutrition.  They would be able to teach tactics, and strategy in sport as well as work with honing sport skills.
  • Talent identification and development officer; this person is likely to be a qualified coach with some experience of working with talented athletes.  A diploma in coaching science would be required to work with higher level athletes or to work with talent identification and development.
  • Sport & Recreation Officer/ Co-ordinator: this person could be a sport manager or a coach and is often employed by local governments/councils to lead recreational activities in local communities for the general upliftment of the community. Recreation officers could also be employed by the larger corporate businesses or hotel groups. This person would require a Diploma in Sport Management.

    Where do sporting and fitness professionals work?  At health and fitness facilities; leisure facilities; sport specific environments; private practice; school; sport clubs; rehabilitation centres; hotel spas; luxury cruise liners.  They also work in government in administration or in recreation management with departments of sport.
