Exercise and Fitness Studies
The eta has developed a range of exciting short courses to empower students with workplace skills so that they can function effectively in their existing and new working environments. The courses are taught at eta campuses or as distance learning programmes. Many of these courses require a background in exercise science.

This course in Exercise and Fitness studies provides the minimum exercise science background for admission into the eta short courses. This is ideal for candidates who do not have a recognised qualification that meets the fitness industry criteria. This course has been benchmarked against the requirements for CYQ accreditation and for acceptance on to the register for exercise professionals.

The following candidates will benefit from this course:
Candidates who do not hold a fitness industry qualification (anatomy and physiology equivalent) and who have not completed an exercise science or nutrition learning programme at NQF level 5 or CYQ level 3.

Admission and Certification Criteria

• Candidate need a grade 12 certificate at NQF level 4 or a letter motivation for acceptance on to the course
• As this course is required as a pre-requisite for certification in the eta specialisation fitness and coaching short courses, on completion of this learning programme and on successful achievement of all assessment criteria, qualifying students receive their certification in their chosen specialisation.
• Should students want to achieve this module as a stand-alone, on successful achievement of the assessment criteria for this learning programme, students receive a certificate in Exercise and Fitness Studies.

Subjects include:
1. Anatomy and physiology of the human body, in the context of exercise and health
2. The principles of exercise, fitness and health Exercise and Fitness Studies
3. Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
4. How to support clients who participate in exercise and physical activity

At the end of this course students will be able to understand and apply;
1. aspects of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems that affect exercise, health and fitness
2. aspects of the musculoskeletal system that affect exercise, health and fitness
3. planes of movement, body types, stability and posture related to exercise, health and fitness
4. aspects of the nervous system that affect exercise, health and fitness
5. aspects of the endocrine system that affect exercise, health and fitness
6. aspects of the energy systems that affect exercise, health and fitness
7. the principles of exercise and the components of fitness
8. the benefits of fitness and apply exercise programming, exercise modalities and exercise intensity
9. health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
10. professionalism, client management and client support in a fitness environment

Course manual and file with study guide and evidence portfolio.

Learning and assessment process:
You will be provided with instructions for the learning process along with learning activities and assessment tasks to monitor your progress. As part of the learning process you will be required to complete your portfolio of evidence. At the end of your learning process you will be required to submit completed formative tasks, knowledge test and a case study

Duration: This programme is based on a minimum of 15-credits, of 150-notional hours with 40-50 supported learning hours. Note: The programme is learner paced. Students learn at different rates and some become competent and confident sooner than others. The learning process for students studying at a campus is twofold: The first part consists of classroom sessions to understand the learning process and explain evidence gathering and assessment. The second part is intense practical
sessions. The amount of sessions will be decided by the lecturer and based on student progress. Distance learning students do not attend classes but are supported by a Tutor.
